How to be a successful Project Manager
If you are passionate, organised,
goal oriented and able to understand the intricacies of business then project
management might be the career option for you. It is a strategic role
responsible for the success, failure and learning curve of any organisation.
Led by a team of hardworking project managers,
the project management department of an organisation plays a vital role in its
making and breaking.
Efficient
and effective: A successful project manager is accountable for not only
efficient planning but also effective execution and closure of a project. The
success of a project manager is not only gauged on the parameter of a working
project but also on its timely closure.
Agent of
change: Project managers are agents of change. A project can only
materialize when the team considers the goals of the project as its own. This
can only happen when the project manager is able to inspire the team and
inculcate in them the feeling of shared goals. One of the toughest jobs of a
project manager is to organize his or her skills and expertise in motivating
and inspiring the mindsets of the team. So if you are a team player then
project management will be a cake-walk for you.
Calm and composed: Some people can’t handle the
excitement of being conferred a responsibility. A successful project manager is
the one who knows how to control the adrenaline rush caused by new challenges
and to organise it towards achieving the business goals. They must know how to
remain calm and composed under ecstasy and anxiety.
Eye for detail: A project manger must know when to
look at the larger picture and when to put on his magnifying glasses. In the
end he is accountable to the management and must have checked each and every
detail of the project.
Flexibility: A person with rigid thoughts can
never succeed as a project manager. He has to know how to adjust to various
circumstances and resolve various complexities by adapting themselves to the
given constraints. “One size doesn’t fit all” remains a thumb rule for a
successful project manager.
Constant learners: Project managers know the importance
of knowledge and information. While driving their team with their skills and expertise,
project mangers keep on adding skills to their coffer of techniques. They are
constantly learning new methods and techniques to improve the quality of work.
Consumer focussed: Project mangers know the demand of
their market. After all, every project is directed towards an audience and it
is imperative to know their demands before designing something for them.
These are some of the characteristics of a
successful project manager. The Project Management Institute is providing some
well known credentials like Project Management Professional (PMP)
Certification. This certification is a widely accepted standard which
demonstrates a person’s competence in the field. There are many organisations like PMI, Amanet and Simplilearn that offers PMP and CAPM training programs.
