A moving story, ‘The Color Purple’ revolves around the brutality and sufferings that a barely literate black woman (Celie) goes through. She gets married at the age of 14 after getting continuously harassed by her own father. She does that to save her sister (Netie) from the same fate.
But more than a story of sufferings it is a journey of Celie’s evolution. It’s a story of Celie’s liberation from the shackles of her loveless married life to an independent woman who eventually gets the life that she deserved.
The story flows flawlessly, as there is no interpretation or interruption by the writer. One can easily connect with the protagonist as after some point of time you tend to live the story.
It is one of those few novels which might not be able to create a mystery around them but still won’t let you sleep before you complete it. Though the subject has been handled many a times but Walker has managed to deal with it in an unprecedented innocence. Moreover, the use of folk language makes one believe and live whatever has been written.
A story of strength and independence, the only weakness in the story is the feeble projection of men. But, Walker has very efficiently managed to tell a story which spans over 40 years of life and various characters in an epistolary style.
The story might leave you smiling with tears in the end but the poignant tale has been beautiful woven by Walker without leaving the reader overflowing with emotions and yet striking a chord with him.
